From today, 4th May, the Italian government is beginning to lift some parts of the lockdown. People will be allowed to visit close relatives and to return to work in limited sectors. However, people will still need to have a good reason to leave their houses and the authorities are still keen that people stay at home as much as possible.
May - Maggio
The word of the month is 'Orto'
meaning 'Vegetable Garden'
No matter what size your vegetable garden is, from a small patch to a large field, it is always called an Orto, and nearly every household has one. Particularly in the south of Italy, the orto provides all the vegetables and fruit for the year. Everything is eaten fresh in the spring and summer and then bottled, dried or stored for the winter. Wine is made from the grapes and oil from the olives - always just enough for the year.
May, more than any other month of the year, wants us to feel most alive.
La febbre di maggio dà salute per tutto l'anno - A fever in May brings good health for the rest of the year
Maggio ventoso, anno bondanzioso - Windy May, busy year
